Amazing experience and taste

Have never tried honey comb before, was not sure how that can be consumed. But it turned out to be so much fun to eat it, it’s like a gum with constantly popping cells with delicious honey in your mouth. Eventually it becomes like a plain gum which needs to be discarded. Perfect with a cup of tea as a lolly. :) I think that way is the best for kids to eat that more if needed, as that’s quite entertaining.

Love it, will certainly buy more!

What is honeycomb made from?

Since raw honeycomb is being produced for human consumption, it is now found worldwide in various habitats and climates.

Honeycomb edible is made from beeswax, a substance created by worker bees. The beeswax is secreted from glands of the worker bees and discarded into the hive. The hive workers will then collect it and work to form the cells of which honey comb is made. Chemically, beeswax consists of naturally occurring fatty acids and various long-chain alcohols.

Bee honeycomb is a structure of hexagonal wax cells created to store honey, pollen, and nest larvae. You can think of raw honey combs as the natural storage facility of beehives. It’s hexagonal walls are made of wax and inside there’s an abundance of stored honey.

To make enough wax, worker bees need a lot of energy. Over thousands of years, bees have evolved to create honey comb with hexagonal wax cells. You may be wondering why exactly hexagons and not circles or squares, or some other shape. Well, the amount of wax needed to build their honeycomb takes a lot of effort as mentioned already. Bees have figured out that hexagonal cells are the most efficient regarding the amount of wax and space used.

Beekeepers in New Zealand are able to extract the comb honey frames from the beehive and replace them with new ones.

When you’re eating raw honey combs, you can expect the wax to have a chewy texture as honey oozes out. It’s completely up to you whether you spit out the remaining wax or decide to swallow. Due to its organic makeup, it will do no harm swallowing the beeswax remains as you’re eating honeycomb.

Can you eat honeycomb? Is honeycomb wax edible?

Absolutely. People have been eating honey and honeycomb for thousands of years. Obviously, we know that the deliciousness oozing out of the honey comb is edible. What most people are referring to when asking ‘can you eat honeycomb’, is the hexagonal wax structure keeping it together. The answer is yes. Eating honeycomb, including the beeswax is fine.

Just like eating honey, raw honeycomb for sale also has its distinct flavours depending on the region of harvesting. Some comb honey for sale is lighter in flavour while another packs a punch of dark bush flora. You are also likely to find comb honey Auckland wide in upscale restaurants for example. There are many dishes and cuisines that do wonders by using honey comb as an ingredient.

In New Zealand bee honeycomb is a very popular Christmas gift and can be found on many family dining tables. New Zealand honeycomb tastes great in salads, with crackers, and as an ingredient in meals and desserts. Alternatively, eating honeycomb on its own, you can truly appreciate the flavor shock that hits you at the first bite.

Are you wondering, ‘Is honeycomb wax edible’ or ‘Do people eat honeycomb’? Lili’s New Zealand Honeycomb is 100% edible. Some may wish to spit the wax remains out or you can eat the honeycomb in its entirety. Therefore, it is a matter of preference rather than a do or don’t for health concerns. One thing to remember when you buy honeycomb NZ wide is that ours is 100% a natural product. Adults and children alike often look forward to the experience of biting into raw honey combs. However, we understand that the texture itself is not for everyone.

What are the health benefits of honeycomb?

Honeycomb is rich in antioxidants and carbohydrates. Antioxidants are plant compounds beneficial to promote good health, reduce inflammation, and protect against disease. Polyphenols, the main antioxidant that honey contains, has been linked to the reduced risk of diabetes, some types of cancer, heart disease, and more.

Lili’s New Zealand honeycomb is honey in its rawest and purest form. This means it hasn’t gone through the filtering and heating processes, that commercial honey goes through, which destroys many of its benefits.

What makes honeycomb so special?

Taking a look at a typical cross-section of a raw honeycomb cell, you would see that it's not circular—it has six sides. This shape is called a hexagon, used by worker bees to efficiently maximise fresh honeycomb storage capacity.

It takes thousands of these cells in perfect alignment to create something as large as an entire real honeycomb. The sheer amount of effort and complexity is exactly what makes comb honey for sale special and a luxury item.

We often see honey comb as a food delicacy through:

  • As a luxury feature to ice cream and champagne.
  • As it turns out, bee honeycomb is a much more versatile ingredient than you might think. Comb honey can be used in desserts and beverages in addition to its traditional role in baked goods.
  • Charcuterie boards on the higher end will also feature honeycomb edible varieties.

It can actually taste different from regular honey as it gives a sense of the flowers the bees have visited. It’s crunchy texture created from thick wax has a plethora of added flavours in addition to the honey stored inside. The best way to describe eating honey comb is like eating natural candy. And, who doesn’t like candy?! Of course, honeycomb NZ made is full of beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and antibacterial properties. So, the answer to the question of ‘can you eat honeycomb’ is yes.
